About ECDL

The ECDL - EUROPEAN COMPUTER DRIVING LICENCE - is an internationally-recognized standard of competence, a widely acceptable certificate that asserts that the holder has the knowledge and skills needed to use the most common computer applications efficiently and productively in the workplace and at home.

The ECDL - EUROPEAN COMPUTER DRIVING LICENCE , known as the ICDLINTERNATIONAL COMPUTER DRIVING LICENCE  outside Europe, is the global standard in end-user computer skills, offering Candidates an internationally recognised certification that is supported by national governments, government departments, computer societies, international organisations and commercial corporations globally.

The ECDL / ICDL is the world’s largest end-user computer skills certification programme, with more than 7 million Candidates in 146 countries, a standard and open syllabus and tests available in more than 40 languages.

ECDL / ICDL raises the level of IT and computer skills and allows Candidates to be more productive at home and at work. ECDL / ICDL also improves job prospects by providing an internationally recognised qualification.

With a superior Syllabus – uniquely validated to ensure that it is always relevant, up-to-date and meaningful – Candidates can be confident that the ECDL / ICDL offers a certification of unrivalled quality.

ECDL Foundation

The ECDL - EUROPEAN COMPUTER DRIVING LICENCE - concept is owned and managed by the EUROPEAN COMPUTER DRIVING LICENCE Foundation.

The ECDL Foundation is the global governing body of the world's leading end-user computer skills certification programme, the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL), which is known as the International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL) outside Europe.

Headquartered in Dublin, the EUROPEAN COMPUTER DRIVING LICENCE Foundation, was established in January 1997 by CEPIS - Council of European Professional Informatics Societies as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee to support and co-ordinate the work of the ECDL Organizations in each member country. The ECDL F is dedicated to helping to raise the general level of computer skills in society and providing access for all to the Information Society.

The ECDL Foundation works to promote a pan-European and an international certificate of industry-standard computing skills.

The ECDL in Cyprus

The ECDL is managed in Cyprus by the Cyprus Computer Society, the scientific, professional, independent, not-for-profit association of Information Technology and Computing in Cyprus.

Established in 1984, the Cyprus Computer Society has more than 800 membes and  is administered by a 7-member Board elected by the Members' General Assembly every two years.

The Cyprus Computer Society introduced the ECDL in Cyprus in February 1999 at a press conference that took place at the Europe Hall of the Giorkeion Hotel. The first ECDL test in Cyprus took place in April 1999.

How & When it Started
The ECDL - EUROPEAN COMPUTER DRIVING LICENCE - concept was developed as part of the work of the User Skills Task Force set up by CEPIS - Council of European Professional Informatics Societies and its member societies ιν 1996.

The whole work was completed with EU Funding within the Leonardo and ESPRIT Projects. 

The ECDL has been introduced and is successfully operatin in all European Union, Scandinavian and Eastern European countries, the USA, Canada, Australia, China and a number of African countries (i.e Zimbabwe, South Africa).

The ECDL is currently the only independent international certificate of end-user IT Skills.
